Position Summary The Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy equipment to excavate trenches and install underground utilities, including water, sewer and storm drain. This position requires precision excavation around existing underground infrastructure while maintaining a safe work environment and meeting project specifications and deadlines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Operate heavy equipment to excavate trenches for underground utility installation.
• Read and interpret construction plans, grade stakes, and utility drawings.
• Excavate to proper grade and depth while maintaining trench safety requirements.
• Work closely with pipe crews to safely install water, sewer, storm drainage, and other underground utility systems.
• Identify and safely work around existing underground utilities.
• Perform daily equipment inspections and routine maintenance, reporting mechanical issues promptly.
• Maintain safe operating procedures in accordance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
• Load trucks, backfill trenches, and perform site grading as required.
• Ensure work areas are clean, organized, and free of hazards.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, foremen, and crew members to ensure project efficiency.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
• Minimum of 3 years of experience operating heavy equipment in underground utility construction preferred.
• Experience installing water, sewer, storm, or other utility infrastructure.
• Ability to read construction plans and understand grade stakes.
• Knowledge of trench safety, excavation practices, and underground utility locating procedures.
• Strong awareness of equipment safety and surroundings.
• Valid driver's license required
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
