Underground Utility Laborer:
Position Summary
The Underground Utility Laborer assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of underground utility systems, including water, sewer, storm drainage, and other utility infrastructure. This position supports equipment operators and pipe crews by performing manual labor, maintaining a safe work environment, and ensuring projects are completed efficiently and according to specifications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Assist with the installation of underground water, sewer, storm drain, and other utility systems.
• Hand dig around existing utilities using shovels and other hand tools to prevent damage.
• Guide equipment operators during excavation and lifting operations.
• Set pipe, fittings, valves, and utility structures under the direction of the foreman.
• Prepare trenches by grading, leveling, and compacting bedding material.
• Install trench boxes, braces, and other trench safety systems as directed.
• Backfill and compact trenches using proper methods and equipment.
• Load and unload construction materials, tools, and equipment.
• Maintain a clean and organized job site while following all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
• Perform daily maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment.
• Work effectively with crew members to complete projects safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• Previous construction or underground utility experience preferred but not required.
• Ability to safely use hand tools and small power equipment.
• Knowledge of underground utility construction practices is a plus.
• Ability to work in trenches and around heavy equipment safely.
• Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn.
• Valid driver's license preferred;
• Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and perform physically demanding work in all weather conditions.
